Returning from a mission to Linz, Austria, 20-Dec-44, Pilot Doyle was forced to ditch the AC [in Adriatic Sea] with 2 crew surviving,   Doyle and LaHan. AC was B24J 42-51837, no nickname indicated. MACR is #10691.
Doyle was killed in late April 1945 when another B-24 he was flying hit a mountainside in poor visibility with
heavy weather conditions.

B-24 [41-28898] took off from Giulia Field, Italy, [28-Apr-45] in-route to Rome with group members going
on R&R. Crashed into mountain during bad weather. 1LT Doyle had just flewn his 35th combat mission and
was rotating back stateside. All crew and passengers – 16 in total – died in the crash.

Lt. Joseph A. Doyle, Jr., Killed In Italy
First Lieutenant Joseph A. Doyle, Jr., Army Air Corps, was killed in action in Italy April 28, according to a
telegram received here Tuesday by his parents from General J.A. Ulio, the adjutant general.
Lieutenant Doyle was a pilot of a B-24 bomber. He volunteered for service December 7, 1942 and was sent
overseas in November, 1944. The next month his plane crashed in the Adriatic sea and eight members of
his crew were killed. He and his co-pilot were rescued by a fishing boat.
He graduated from Winyah high school where he was a star athlete and attended The Citadel until he
volunteered. He was born in Georgetown November 24, 1924.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ambrose Doyle; two sisters, Miss Johnnie Doyle, as student
at Converse, and Sarah Doyle; and three brothers, James, Ingell and Arthur Doyle, all of Georgetown.
